Mahakam River

East Kalimantan is one of provinces in Borneo Island, also called as the Equator Pearl due to its abundant natural resources. The land offers magnificent natural beauties for visitors. One of them is the mighty Mahakam River which meanders of hundreds kilometers through one of the largest tropical rainforest in the world with twenty main Dayak sub-ethnics, once feared as headhunters settle on the river basin. Cruise the mighty river and encountering the rainforest will give you the opportunity to explore remote and unique world of the famous Dayak tribe on their harmonious life unite to the majestic nature of Borneo. The Middle Mahakam Lakes covers an area about 400,000 ha, located in East Kalimantan on the Sundaland eco-region and part of the Mahakam River, which is one of the major river systems of Kalimantan. The lakes and the wetland areas are one of Kalimantan's most important wetlands areas. It has been identified as a crucial breeding and migration site for a total of 90 bird species, including important breeding populations of various herons and the Lesser Adjutant. Fish diversity and the presence of endangered mammals such as Proboscis Monkeys, wild ox, False Gavial and Siamese Crocodile, as well as the critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphin indicate the importance of preservation of these areas. The preservation of these wetlands and lakes has not only a national but also international biodiversity importance in terms of migrating and breeding bird species in this area. Dayak is the indigenous people of Borneo by the Indonesian part which is known as Kalimantan. They are classified into 450 ethno-linguistic groups approximately. Despite some differences, these group share customs, physical features, architecture, language, social structure, weapons, agricultural technology and similar outlook in life. In the past, anthropologists described that the Dayak as the "legendary natives of Borneo" who live in longhouse and engaged in head-hunting, today their traditional swords “mandau” are no longer used to collect grisly trophies. Nevertheless, the Dayak is still continuing to maintain their traditional way of life and culture as the proud of their identity.

 

 

MAHAKAM RIVER ADVENTURE I

Duration: 06 Days/05 Nights Grade: Easy

Day 01  ARRIVAL IN BALIKPAPAN – LOA JANAN – MUARA MUNTAI Meet at airport and directly transfer to Loa Janan for boarding the houseboat to start the exciting adventure of Mahakam River. Lunch, dinner and overnight on houseboat. (L,D)

Day 02  MUARA MUNTAI – MANCONG – MUARA PAHU Arrive at Muara Muntai and sightseeing villagers daily activities from the long wooden bridge which is made of iron wood. Next, proceed to Mancong by motorized canoe crossing the Jempang Lake of which we will have the opportunity to view plenty of water bird species and fishermen floating houses as well as the romantic Ohong River where proboscis monkeys, monitor lizards and other wild animals are hanging around at riverside. In Mancong, we will explore an exotic longhouse and Benuaq Dayak daily life.  Afterwards, return to houseboat for cruising upward to Muara Pahu. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight on houseboat. (B,L,D)

Day 03  MUARA PAHU – BOLOWAN RIVER – MELAK After breakfast, we will cruising up the Bolowan River into Gunung Bayan while exploring wildlife such as proboscis monkeys, black leaf monkeys, long tailed maccaque, birds, and other wild animals on riverside. We will then continue to Tebisak village for explore the daily life of Dayak and watching colorful dress dancers that welcome you with an impressive attraction in front of their longhouse. Afterwards, return to houseboat for cruising upward to Melak. Lunch, dinner and overnight on houseboat. (B,L,D)

Day 04  MELAK – EHENG – KERSIK LUWEY – MAHAKAM RIVER Arrive at Melak and directly transfer to Eheng village for visiting an old and impressive longhouse with its unique ornament and shape while exploring the Tunjung Dayak daily life. Next, we will drive to Kersik Luwey reserve for observing the rare black orchid and other flora on the zone. Afterwards return to houseboat for cruising downward the Mahakam River. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight on houseboat. (B,L,D)

Day 05  TENGGARONG – BALIKPAPAN After breakfast at houseboat, we will then walking to Museum of Mulawarman to explore the King Collection and Royal Cemetery of Kutai Kartanegara Kingdom. Afterwards, cruising downward the Mahakam River into Loa Janan and directly driving for about 2,5 hours to Balikpapan for overnight on hotel. Free at your own leisure. (B,L,D)

Day 06  DEPARTURE Breakfast at hotel and free at your own leisure till the proper time for transferring to airport for your next destination. (B)

Day 01   BALIKPAPAN – SAMARINDA – KOTA BANGUN Meet at airport and directly transfer to Kota Bangun for about 6 hours drive and then proceed to check in to the homestay. Next, cruising the Semayang and Melintang Lakes for spotting the fresh water dolphins and unique life of villagers as well as the beautiful panorama and sunset of the lake. Afterwards, return to homestay for overnight. (L,D)

Day 02  KOTA BANGUN – MANCONG – MUARA MUNTAI Proceed to Mancong by motorized canoe crossing the Jempang Lake of which we will have the opportunity to view plenty of water bird species and fishermen floating houses as well as the romantic Ohong River where proboscis monkeys, monitor lizards and other wild animals are hanging around at riverside. In Mancong, we will explore an exotic longhouse and Benuaq Dayak daily life. Afterwards, proceed to Muara Muntai for overnight on homestay. Day 03  MUARA MUNTAI – KUYUNG – SAMARINDA After breakfast, we will explore the exotic of Muara Muntai village with the long wooden bridge which is made of iron wood linking all the roads and alleys of the hamlet, and then proceed to Kuyung to catch the car for driving to Tenggarong town to explore the King Collection on the Museum of Mulawarman and Royal Cemetery of Kutai Kartanegara kingdom. Afterwards, driving to Samarinda for overnight on hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 04  SAMARINDA – DEPARTURE Breakfast at hotel and free at your own leisure till the proper time for transferring to airport for your next destination. (B)
